Outlines Versus Treatments
What is the difference between a script Outline and a script Treatment? One is a brief breakdown of your script. The other one is more detailed, but basically the same thing. I have always thought that an Outline is the shorter version and the Treatment being the longer one. Some say it’s the other way around. To me, I have been doing it right. An Outline sounds more like the shorter version than a Treatment does. On the other hand, a Treatment sound like it should be the longer version instead of an Outline. I might be wrong about that, but that’s how I write my scripts.
Why am I debating between Outlines and Treatment right now? It’s because of my Treasure Finders project that I am working on. I got a lot of it done yesterday at work. In fact, I’m almost ready to start writing my Outline for it. I’ve got the breakdown done for the different Acts. What I mean by that is that I have who is in each scene, which scene they are in, and what that scene is about. At least I’ve got two of the three parts of that last sentence completed. The only thing left to do is write a brief one-line sentence for each scene. Once I’m finished with that, I will be ready to start on my Outline.
I’m still not sure how I’m going to write my Outlines, though. I know the basic structure for them, but I’m not sure on if I want to do only the Outline for the movie or if I want to do it for the first two episodes too. One thought is to write all three Outlines first then start on the Treatments and then the scripts. On the other hand, I could do them in order with the Outline, the Treatment, and the script for the movie. Then the same thing for the first episode, and then the same thing for the second episode. I’m thinking about doing the movie trio first, and then the episode, but I haven’t made up my mind yet.
I’ve still got a day or two, three days at the most, to decide about that. It’s going to take me that long to do my one-sentence scene for each scene. I’m hoping that I can get it all done in one day, but most likely it will take at least two days. It shouldn’t take three days, but it might. I’ll know more after I get done with work today. A lot of that might depend on work too. If it’s a normal day at work I probably won’t get it done. Then again, if it’s not a normal day, I might be able to get it done. Unless it’s busier than normal. Then I might not get it all done.
