Growing Up:
Meditation on Humanity's Coming of Age

Time is a spiral staircase.
ascending from past to future.

Each new age
is another level
in humanity's upward climb.

Each a new phase
in the development
of the race.

The present generation--
the missing link
between past and future--
stands at the midway point
between yesterday and tomorrow.

We are the bridge
connecting our parents
with our children.

Entangled in the present
we fight change,
and succeed
only in retarding our own progress.

To mature
we must let go
of primitive misconceptions.

This poem is a combination of two poems I wrote in different years. The poems, both titled "Evolution", were written in 137 and 151 B.E. After much meditation and contemplation, I decided to combine them because they covered the same theme and subject, and had several identical lines and stanzas.
