My response to Holly in Houston re housing homeless vets and refugees:

'Our city is undergoing rapid gentrification as the uber-money of the nouveau-riche funnels in from the West Coast. We don't have as many empty buildings; they are bought up, demolished, and a distillery or condos for the wealthy are built. But... Montana has empty units and empty towns east of here. 40,000 homeless is a drop in the bucket. Add 60,000 refugees and that's 10% of our population (1 million in Montana). Houston has added 200-300,000 people since 2010. And according to studies is 9% undocumented immigrants. Neither is causing Houston to fade away like a ghost town along abandoned railroad tracks... So, yes, "homeless-vets" are merely an excuse to not helping others. It's not the numbers; it's the racism and attitude we have toward the needy and the poor among us."
