I responded to my friend Nick who posted an article from last year from 538 about Russian trolls:

Key last phrase: "'They are trying to divide our country,” Linvill added." I think the Russian trolls just are on to something very American. Now? This goes on regardless, in the tone of some of my friends. They've bought into the idea that no one can have an opinion that contradicts their own. The level of civil discourse on-line is dismal. In person, people just refuse to engage. At the Senior Center one can only talk about gossip; online, only about dogs and cats. This distaste for engagement erodes any sense of democracy which needs a marketplace for ideas to flourish.
