Lost skills
My Mother-in-law died recently aged in her nineties and she never lost the ability to write beautifully. She left school at fourteen years of age with great spelling, the times tables under her belt and of course her beautiful copperplate script.
That was when great importance was put on the three R’s.
I too was taught to practice my handwriting at school, but it’s not as neat as it used to be, because my days of hand writing letters have long gone with the advent of the computer and email.
As for our new generations, cursive handwriting is still taught of course in primary schools but once the kids go to high school they mostly use IPads or laptops to complete their homework.
The shorthand usage in their text messages surely must have an impact on their ability to spell correctly too.
Even emojis are taking the place of our need to put words to emotions! 😩 Although I confess to using them🤭
