Reading Mommy's Poetry Books... |
Here is another silly poem: Strictly Germ-Proof by Arthur Guiterman The Antiseptic Baby and the Prophylactic Pup Were playing in the garden when the Bunny gambolled up; They looked upon the creature with a loathing undisguised; It wasn’t disinfected and it wasn’t sterilised. They said it was a microbe and a hotbed of disease; They steamed it in a vapor of a thousand-odd degrees; They froze it in a freezer that was cold as banished hope And washed it in permanganate with carbolated soap. In sulphurated hydrogen they steeped its wiggly ears; They trimmed its frisky whiskers with a pair of hard-boiled shears; They donned their rubber mittens and they took it by the hand And ’lected it a member of the Fumigated Band. There’s not a micrococcus in the garden where they play; They bathe in pure iodoform a dozen times a day; And each imbibes his rations from a hygienic cup — The Bunny and The Baby and The Prophylactic Pup. I think we chose this for the sing_songy rhythm. It is just a silly ditty but has some big words for me as a little girl first hearing it read. Hearing it and seeing it at the same time. We sat and looked at the pages together. No wonder I was a good reader as a youngster. I copied my mother's reading habits. Actually, because of my faith, I wish Mommy and I had read the Bible together or that I had memories of her reading the Bible. I don't. We had Bibles in our home. I remember Mommy's wedding Bible. I don't remember ever reading the Bible with her though. I do remember her teaching me to treat the Bible with respect and never set anything on top of it. To this day, I keep that rule. However, I read it, as well. Anyways, silly poems are a part of my life and I guess everyone's, eh? I am remembering another silly one right now so on to the next entry... ~ ~ ~ JESUS is LORD! ~ ~ ~ |
