My Mistake
When young, I had my choice of beaus.
My charms were good enough to please.
I’d never suffered loss or woes
And lived a life of wealth and ease.
He swept me off my feet with words
That messed my mind and touched my heart.
I only heard the singing birds
And thought he was a work of art.
He bent his knee beneath a tree
To pledge his troth and promise much.
In truth, he never cared for me.
At most, I was a useful crutch.
I learned too late his wicked ways.
I’ll pay until the end of days.
Form: sonnet
Lines: 14
Inspiration line: “Reader, I married him” from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
