Widow's Watch
Originally entered in August round of "Stormy's poetry newsletter & contestOpen in new Window. with deadline of August 8, 2020, and prompt words: lighthouse hope seagull waves sand power crashing clouds. ("My entry for August"  Open in new Window.)

Stately lighthouse marks jutting coast.
Relentless sentinel of hope
throws pulsing beams into the dark
for souls who sail the sea at night.

Shrill seagulls flock 'round splintered hull
of barquentine which came too close.
Her captain drowned in crashing waves
and washed up on the sandy beach.

Back home, his loving wife projects
power of faith for his return,
standing vigil from rooftop ledge,
'til black clouds send chills down her spine.
She knows he will never come home.
