The scent of burning peat permeated the den. Tobias sipped his hot cocoa. His left nostril was hot with the aroma of cocoa. How quickly the things we know can change he mused. Tobias stoked the peat in the potbelly stove. And he took the kettle of hot cocoa off the stove. "Didn't see anything moving about outside?" Kara asked. She had been to the barn for some eggs. "It's too dark to see anything woman" Tobias answered. "I didn't hear even a cricket" Kara shivered. Tobias sighed as he looked at the old TIMES magazine cover: "Trump makes war with IRAN." "That devil blew up half the world." Tobias shuddered. Tobias was quite a robotic technician. He sent out queries to his sentry drones. It was late, 9 pm. "The drones see nothing" Tobias kissed Kara. Kara rubbed her shoulders, "Those mutants.." "It's alright. They can't get to the island." Tobias checked his security cameras, "Nope. No intruders." Kara smiled and plugged in her battery charger. She needed a recharge now that the sun had set. "Tobias do you love me?" the android queried. "Of course." Tobias kissed Kara passionately. Tobias had lost his wife and children in the war. COVID2024 had pushed humanity to the edge of extinction. Kara put a plate of eggs and ham in front of Tobias. He rolled his wheelchair to the window and watched the waves break on the craigs.
