We've recently watched

Dept Q (series) - 1 Season so far
Animal Kingdon (series) (we have a few episodes left) - 6 Seasons

Both are on Netflix and both are excellent.

Nice to know about F1: The Movie. We've been in the mood to go to a movie theatre lately, and the previews looked great for the big screen!

I watched Sirens. Absolutely flawless performances.
I can imagine rewatching it after a while.

First son and I watched all the old Mission Impossible movies in the past few weeks and both thought the finale was competent. My biggest gripe with the stunts was that they each could have been shorter because a 3 hour runtime + previews is hard to survive in the theater without becoming a nuisance to the others. Pretty much everyone had to leave during some part of the movie. I still enjoyed it and will rewatch it when it comes to streaming.

We had a SAG screener for Gladiator II and couldn't make it past the beginning. The acting was... I don’t even know what to say, but this one feels like it would have been better to be named something different to be able to stand on its own.

So interesting that songs "stick" like that, for whatever reason.
Mine is "Manic Monday" We would sing it every day while driving my daughter to day care before work. She still remembers that as the "going to work song".

I miss a restaurant called Sea Salt that used to be in Salt Lake. It was one of the best Italian restaurants I've ever eaten at. The pasta was made fresh every day and the ingredients fresh and mostly locally sourced. Such good food and fantastic service. A rent dispute with the landlord led to its downfall and there really hasn't been a replacement since it closed in 2018.

I love The Martian- Watney is an awesome character. I like all of Andy Weir's books. I'll have to check out the Collapsing Empire series. Lady Kiva sounds fun to read.

Two of my favorite characters are Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files and Jason from He Who Fights With Monsters. There's a line that sticks with me from one of the books- "the building was on fire and it wasn't my fault this time" that seems to perfectly sum up Harry.

And Jason- well, I like his insouciance and use of humor to hide the darkness. For female characters, I love Beth from Yellowstone- she's a trainwreck and an absolute joy to watch and see what she's going to do next. Nanny Ogg from Discworld ranks up there as well.

There was a small sandwich/ pizza shop, I always grabbed either a pizza or subs on my way home from work on Fridays. Everything was always prepared just so and the owner often threw in a big bag of chips. He would ask about my kids by their names when I came in. Once my kids started driving and they would grab our Friday night dinner he would ask if I was okay.
Sadly, the owner passed away suddenly and his son took over the business. The son didn't approach business the same, he raised the prices and never made attempts to know his customers. We stopped going there as did many of his dad's loyal customers. The business survived for about two years before folding.
Unfortunately, the building remained empty for a few years and then was bulldozed to make a parking lot for a bar that came into town.

It's a shame when we lose those special connections with others.

Last trip to Thailand after 7 months: where is Nan and the lady who sold luggage? What happened to the pastry shop? Where's Ben? Where did Joe go (at least Rick told me he moved).

When I come back to the Senior Center in Montana: "who died?".

If you need a summer vacation that's less searing (at least in theory), the Jersey Shore is pretty decent and has plenty of options for keeping the kids entertained. That can help you get a state crossed off your list.

(Note: I'm most familiar with Ocean City and Wildwood and would probably recommend going to Ocean City first. The atmosphere is less crazy and hectic than Wildwood, which might be easier for young kids to deal with. There are still options for rides, mini-golf, and a wide variety of pizza and ice cream/custard.)

Watch List - June 2025

To qualify for my Watch List every month, the following has to be something that I've watched that's new to me. It doesn't necessarily have to be a current show, but it can't be reruns or rewatches of something I've already seen. So if I'm including it in this list, it means this month is the first time I've watched it. I'll put "DNF" (Did Not Finish) next to anything that I stopped watching and have no immediate plans to finish.

I saw more movies in the theater this month than I have in ages (four!), and it was fun to get back to the idea of prioritizing viewing a movie in a quiet theater where the movie itself is your only focus, rather than watching it home where you might have a bunch of other distractions keeping you from focusing on the story and the characters. And with the sole exception of Ice Age: Collision Course (which is one that my kids picked to watch one day), I thought all of the movies I saw this month were decent in their own way.

The movie that I was most excited about was F1: The Movie since I've been following Formula 1 racing a lot lately. While the movie wasn't by any means perfect, it was really engaging and I liked it a lot. I can't remember the last time I was a movie that was over two hours that I didn't think could stand to be edited down a bit, but this one flew by. The racing action was really great, and it was a fun watch. I definitely want to go back to see it again in a 4DX theater (where the seats rumble and move)!

Top Chef (Season 22)

Goliath was an interesting show. The first season was an excellent legal drama, and then the second season was almost nothing like the first, as the show turned into more of a crime investigation/thriller with very few legal aspects to it. I heard that the showrunner changed after the first season so maybe the new one just didn't want to make a legal show, and instead make a crime show where the lead character just happened to be a lawyer? I've heard mixed things about the third and fourth seasons, so we'll probably watch them at some point, but we're not rushing to do so.

The only other thing I watched this month was Season 22 of Top Chef which was a good if unremarkable season of the show. Maybe it's just starting to feel a little old, but I wasn't really wowed by anything. I was rooting for the person who won, so I was happy in that respect, but I'm not sure how memorable it'll be in the long term.
