Realistic Fiction about Family Drama |
About That Thin Line How Far Are We Willing to Go Yea, Whom ever coined the phrase or wrote that song “It’s a Thin line between Love and Hate made that general statement for more than one reason because it did not just refer to lovers in a love affair. Yea, about that thin line, it needs to be explored to the fullest as we take a closer look at the implications of the line itself and what it represents. First let’s look at it from the point of view of greed, then from the point of view of selfishness, control, love, need, want, and etc. I imagine for any given situation that this line can be thought of as a line of steel, cotton, plastic, or silk. Today As recent as today, I treaded that line when I heard a family member completely ignore the request and demands of his mother. He had been causing mischief all day with his sisters and he completely ignores their request to leave them alone. One sister was ready to fight in order to get him to stop and mom tried to intervene. She wanted him to take a walk and she said it more than once. She got so irritated that he did not honor her request that she threatened to punch him in the face. She had approached that thin line. She hated it so she ended up retreating from the line in order to maintain her composure and diffuse the situation. I told him that I would take that short walk with him and he declared that he did not want anyone to be around him and he repeated that he did not want to go on a walk. I reminded him that it was his mother’s request to do so and that he must honor her wishes. Then he said “Please get away from me, please don’t come around me.” And he pushed me to that line! How dare he! Fifteen years old living in my house with no respect for anyone! Yea, I was at the line, ready to explode. Retreating From the Line I wanted to grab out and drag him out of my house. I wanted to shout and call him a lazy no good disrespectful bum. But I retreated. It took all of my strength to retreat. I must have bounced from the line because I said in a calm voice, you did not do what your mother said. He replied “she told me to clean up my room.” I turned and walked away. I could only retreat without making this already volatile situation worse. This was not a new situation and he had already been trained by his mother and his father to act this way. There was no changing him. I had to run away from him. I had to retreat from that line because I don’t want to cross it. Crossing that line would defile me into something that I am not. I had to remember that I do not like the behavior and that behavior can be taught. Should we be grateful for the line? Is that a line of protection and reason or is it the line of no return? Let’s explore this further. Family conflicts happen all the time. Of course we can recall the first family conflict from the Holy Bible between Cain and Able. What can we infer about Cain’s approach to the line? Had he been there before? The Line I had to retreat from that line because I don’t want to cross it.
