A Journal to impart knowledge and facts

July 22, 2015

I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done.

I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them.

I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC.

Windows 10 starts today. I checked my desktop and the windows logo says they will notify me when it is ready to download. I hope this does not turn out to be the problem of the year.

When I got up today there was a fog in the air spreading from ground level to the top of the horizon. Above the fog was the bright sun rising into a clear blue sky. The fog wet the ground like there had been a soaking rain. We are fortunate to have a breeze flowing in the windows to keep the house cool. Yesterday the air was still and the heat was oppressive. We have a lot of trees in the yard and the air flowing through the leaves sounds like pieces of silk being rubbed together.

There is a Robin's nest in a recess on the corner of the back porch. It is tucked back under the porch light. The parents were in the Elm tree near the back porch in the morning screeching when I went to check I could see a brown backed, speckled chested juvenile standing on the edge of the nest surveying the surrounding yard. It was probably pretty warm in the nest but I wondered if the parents were trying to call it out of the nest. If they were it did not take the hint because it was still there in the evening.

The young barn swallows nesting in the garage have taken to the air. It caused a riot of joy within the barn swallow group as they all flew in and out of the barn and garage with the juveniles joining in the flight.

I really like www.howtogeek.com they have the answers to questions about computers that I did not know to ask. If you are interested you can find an article there about the digital assistant named, Cortana, that is going to be included with window 10. I bought my first computer in 1999 it was then that I was able to get online for the first time. At the time I had Bonzi Buddy on my computer for awhile and we used to share funny sayings and poetry. Cortana looks like it will be an asset because it can be scheduled to give out reminders of important functions.

I have a small designer dog named Char. He is part Pomeranian and part Jack Russel terrier. I have to say he was not sad to see Pearl the Boxer go home. Now he has the attention all to himself. He was raised by my granddaughter for the first 3 years of his life. And, he is always especially happy when she is here in the summer to visit. We call him our little Great Dane because he has a very large personality.

The English Sparrows are getting the message about leaving my barn but now they are moving into the garage; not a good idea. Also, had to promise my husband I would get them out of the garage he was not amused when they moved. Last night there were 5 deer under the apple tree in the back yard. That is an increase from 2 last week.

We are in that quiet time. The time we sit and wait for the hay to come off the field. Then the unloading crew congregates in the barn and pulls 200 bails of hay off the wagon as quickly as they can. We are using baled hay so it has to be stacked properly so it can breathe and not get to hot inside the barn. The bales weigh average of 45 to 55 lbs. For us, now, we only do this kind of work once a year because we need the winter feed for the only 1 horse and 1 pony we still keep. Both, are not young animals any more but I still enjoy their company and they enjoy the long days of peace in the pasture since their work days are over for the most part.

The BOXER I am dog sitting is going home later today. Her family is back from vacation and will be picking her up soon. I like big dogs but I only have a small dog now and having a larger dag around for a few weeks was fun.

I found an article on www.sciencemag.org by Carolyn Graming about phytoplankton that cast particles and gases into the atmosphere above the oceans of the South that become the beginnings of clouds. The article is a study about atmosphere.

Windows 10 will be with us soon. I've been reading some of www.Howtogeek.com's articles and they do give out some interesting preview facts. I found out if your brave you can get a preview copy to test drive.

Although I tried out p15WDC before it was totally up I passed on windows 10 until they work out some of the bugs.

I found a new (to me) storage container for peanut butter from (OXO), We use fresh 100 percent peanut butter mixed with peanut oil. When it is mixed I can put it in the snap up top container, then into the refrigerator where it stays fresh but does not get solid but stays creamy for spreading on soft bread. The containers cost about $15.00 online but I have been buying them in KMART for 12.00. The pop top comes apart for easy washing and then reassembles easily.

It seems like every time we mow the lawn the humidity comes back builds up and grows higher grass. Snow shoveling in the winter and grass mowing in the summer.

When we were shopping yesterday we drove passed many farmers getting their hay off the fields. It makes the air full of fresh mowing scent. I like the smell when the lawn in freshly mown but the smell of hay fields being cut is stronger and better yet.

OK! Life is moving on.

I found a small story online about the Tesla Powerwall. It is a gizmo that hangs on your wall if you have solar panels. You can skip the batteries this will call the energy right from the Solar Panels into your home. The Company that makes them is sold out until 2016. If you are a Solar Power person this will thrill you I'm sure.

I'm baby sitting a wonderful Boxer that will be with me for another week maybe. Today I found out one of my Granddaughters is coming to stay for awhile. Which is really good because haying season is upon us and I can use all the help I can get for haying season.

This is short but that is because I've been shopping all day and I need a rest. Happy Trails

I stacked my daily amount of wood in the wood shed. So, I took the dogs for a walk. Wouldn't you know. Just as we came around the front of the house a runner went jogging by down the road. I have a boxer visiting this week and she thought it might be her job to move the jogger down the road faster. Lucky for me her leash and collar held and I was able to persuade her the jogger was not her business.

One day during the winter I was walking down by the pond which was frozen over with thick ice. From the edge to about 10 feet out toward the middle the ice was very clear like glass.
Since the pond is water gathered in a depression between two slanted pieces of ground it is never deeper than approximately 3 feet. And, it is graduated deeper from the edge into the center. I was very surprised to see young tadpoles swimming around and diving into the muddy bottom stirring up unfrozen muck. I went online later to look up tadpoles and discovered that if they hatch late in the season they suspend their growth for several months and remain as tadpoles waiting for the spring season to mature into a 4 legged frog. It is the small things about science that surprise me and add interest to life.
