the tea ready?' called Jack
'Just waiting on the potatoes. ' Isa replied, willing them to cook. 'She didn't want to upset him, and she prodded them again.
'That will do, I'll put a little butter on them.'
'I'm going upstairs and when I come down I will expect dinner on the table.'
She laid the plate of stew and potatoes on the table.
'We mustn't keep you from your cronies, she mimicked. It's not as if you take me anywhere. '

Jack was a bully he slapped her when things weren't going his way, and he only gave her enough money to see to the bills and food, and kept a good part of the rest of them for his pocket. Isa had a part time job in the factory, and she had a good friend who she went to the community hall to play a game of bingo. Isa never disclosed to Jack she went to the community hall. If he knew she was going to the bingo he would give her less money for housekeeping.
He appeared at the dining table dressed in his second best suit, a charcoal grey, black suede shoes, and a red tie with matching handkerchief in the top pocket. Isa thought, I don't know who you are dressing up for, but it's not for me.
Jack looked at the stew and mumbled, but Isa was in the kitchen and she didn't hear him, and when he went out of the house she took her apron off, tidied her hair to go to the bingo.
Nan was her friend at work and she was calling for Isa, and it wasn't long before there was a knock on the door. Nan had arrived.

The hall was just around the corner and she was always home before jack. She had won a few times, and was saving the money under the carpet. What Nan didn't know was she intended to leave Jack, and go and live in France, it was her dream and she decided to make it happen. She had taken enough of his bullying, and as she had no children there wasn't anything standing in her way

The big game was the national where all the bingo halls played one game and winner takes all.
They settled into their seats and Isa collected the teas. The bingo was about to start, and the caller began by saying 'eyes down.'
Nan won a few lines, but Isa was still hoping, and it was time for the big game and everybody was listening with intent. Isa was marking the numbers off fast, she was only waiting on two 44 and top of the shop 90.The caller called 44 and the sweat broke from her forehead. 90 he cried and she screamed 'Bingo!'

Just Before Dark
Chapter2

Isa waited with bated breath as they checked her card in the bingo hall, she had shouted bingo in the big game .’The National .’ This game was where all the bingo halls played together and winner takes all. The card was right and now she had to wait and see if she was to share or if she had the sole winning ticket. She trembled with excitement, and Nan brought some sweet tea for the shock, and It was announced a few minutes later that she had the winning ticket a tidy sum of £3,000. Her mind went straight to the money she had stashed under the bedroom carpet another seven hundred pounds.
She looked at Nan, and thought should I discuss my plans for this lovely money? ‘No ‘ this was a secret until she left home.

Jack was home early and as soon as she walked through the door he ranted and raved at her for being out. ‘I went to the bingo with a friend from work.
No I won’t be going again she quickly added before he gave her more verbal abuse. She left him swearing to her and made her way into the kitchen to make the supper before retiring to bed.

Jack went to work and Isa phoned into the manager and said she would be off for a few days. She the booked her rail ticket to take her to the fihe destination to board the ferry across to France.
Isa packed a suitcase with sensible clothes, because they would have to do for quite a while until she finds a home and a job.
Checking everything was in order scribbled to notes one to her best friend explaining her actions and the Dark was descending, and putting her coat and hat on she boarded her Taxi just before Jack was to due to come home.

Jack entered the house and called Isa, he made his way into the lounge and he noticed the note propped up against the mantle shelve.
‘ What’s she up to now?’ and he tore the envelope open, and the letter said ‘Gone to seek a better life. He threw the note down on to the dining and left the house to seek his dinner at the chip shop before going out to the pub. The words on the letter were annoying him and he muttered,’ where the hell would she be? And she has no money or has she?’

Isa was crossing over the channel, and cruising towards France. A young man sat beside her and soon they were in conversation.
’ Have you been in France before?’ he asked
‘No it’s my first visit.’ He then went to the bar and bought two coffee, and the chatted about France He gave Isa a list of the places he thought were interesting for her to visit. The journey was pleasant and soon it was time to disembark from the vessel. He said goodbye and she made her way to the hotel. It was ten in the evening and she ordered tea in her room before she retired to her bed, and she wondered what jack was doing but she pushed the thoughts from her mind and slept.

In the morning she opened the curtains and said to herself .
.’A new beginning’ . She dressed and went to the reception to find a map of the area, so to look around the sites and find a job and an apartment.
