That's unacceptable regarding the parking situation. To be told you're allowed to park someplace, and then not allowed to park there due to a requirement that clearly should have been mentioned in the letter. I usually use the valet parking option for my eye appointments, as it's free and reasonably convenient.

I used to go horse riding as a teenager. We lived in the city and I begged my parents to let me have a horse, and I swore I would look after it. Fortunately, they said no because that would never have worked out

I used to love horses though and I spent all my spare time at the stables, which were a half-hour bike ride away. But it's different when you chose to help muck out the stables when it suits you compared to having to do it because it's your horse, in the freezing cold or when it's raining.

I haven't been near a horse since then. I would probably be a bit scared of them now.

Great advice! As I reach the "mid-career" level of my life, I find myself thinking more and more about retirement and what planning I should do now to make sure that those later years are properly financed. But I'm honestly surprised at how many people my age don't have ANY retirement savings. Or much savings. Many of them are the result extenuating life circumstances (which no one can control), but there are quite a few who just "haven't gotten around to thinking about it" yet. That terrifies me because, as you said, starting earlier in life is the best way to ensure later success!

I was struck by your choice to compare dogs with horses. I love dogs, mostly the mutt variety. I've always thought they are the most down-to-earth animals. We always had a dog when I was growing up.

My wife is a cat person of the first magnitude. So for the past 12 years I've been getting to know a number of cats. Our one cat remaining has grown on me. My wife also loves horses. I wish her all the best ... but my horses remain on the television.

I guess it's the changes in life that makes us grow. And by the way, keep it up with the Blog Harbor prompts.

I'm not sure I have the bones to be a real poet. But I do enjoy dabbling with the many forms there are. Fourteen years ago I joined a group called Poetic Explorations. It no longer exists, but its purpose was to have members write a poem using a different form each week for 50 weeks. I actually made it through week 29 before life interruptus happened.

My efforts are in a folder called "Poetic Explorations"

. I really enjoyed writing form poetry.

I'm a member of "The Poet's Place "

, but haven't been as active as I might be.

1. Coffee in the morning.

2. My daughter lives near me and helps when I ask. Or she volunteers. She's truly a blessing.

3. I don't have a car, which is okay. No car payment or car insurance.

4. I'm thankful for my view of the lake.

5. I adore my grandsons.

6. Thanks to my mom. She helps me out financially so I can live in a nice apartment.

7. I'm thankful for my friends here. I have no others in the real world.

8. I'm thankful for cloudy weather and cool temperatures.

9. Even though my budget is tight, I'm thankful for what I do have.

10. My oldest brother is my rock.

Word Classics and More

Word Power

I picked up an old pocket book off my shelf - Word Power, to do a little review. This edition published 1981. After perusing the book, I came across a section I just had to share. This one is called Classroom Classics. We have various phrases such as

Definitions:
Cubism is the rules of very young Scouts.
Filet Mignon is a opera by Puccini.
A hamlet is a little pig.
Teetotalers are boys who carry golf clubs. They are generally paid except in Scotland.

Politics:
The President has the power to appoint and disappoint the members of his Cabinet.
A conservative is a kind of greenhouse where you look at the moon.

History:
Queen Elizabeth was the "Virgin Queen". As a Queen she was a success.

Hygiene:
False doctrine means giving people the wrong medicine.

Another:
Do you know what a skid-talker is? This was news to me.

A skid-talker is more than a slip of the tongue. It is a slip of the whole mind. So examples:
"It is a great picture. Don't miss it if you can."
"Too many cooks in the soup."
"There I was, left holding the jackpot."
"We miss you almost as much as if you were here."
