27th Besides writing, what are your hobbies?

I don’t really do hobbies. I walk daily, each morning at 6am with my dog and also attend a fitness class twice a week. The only other regular thing besides writing is to go to choir.

28th List your top 8 favorite candies.

Turkish delight. Salted caramel and Cadbury flake.

23rd What are some things that most people don’t know about you?

I actually think I’m an open book. I haven’t any secrets. I’m trying to think of something. There must be something? Maybe it’s something so deep even I don’t know it about myself. A subconscious bias, maybe?

24. What is your favorite restaurant?

Thai food restaurants are my favourite.

25. What things can’t you live without?

Tea, coffee, a good night’s sleep.

26. What podcasts do you listen to?

Interviews with interesting people. They don’t need to be famous, just interesting. I also enjoy listening to anything to do with physical or mental health.

Myth vs Fact: Sleep

If you live a busy life, sleep may be the last thing on your mind, but we know that many people are searching for the latest techniques to help them get a better night’s rest.
Scroll to read

With that in mind, here are six sleep facts and sleep myths to help you improve your habits.

Lack of sleep can affect your weight

Fact! Sleep appears to affect a number of factors that can have an impact on your weight. Recent studies have found that people who were sleep deprived – usually sleeping less than seven hours each night – had an increase of appetite and gained weight.2,3 Also, sleeping less provides more opportunity to eat, and insufficient sleep has been shown to impair the body's use of insulin, which can lead to the onset of diabetes.

The older you get the less sleep you need

Myth! Although sleep patterns change as we age, the need for sleep generally does not. Older people may wake more often during the night, and may sleep less at night-time, but they still need as much sleep as younger adults. This may mean that older adults sleep more during the day: planned naps can be a good strategy for ensuring enough sleep. If you know there are a lot of activities coming up later on in the day, be sure to plan a nap beforehand to help you get enough sleep!

Insomnia can be a symptom of depression

Fact! Not being able to sleep, or waking up very early in the morning can be a symptom of depression.6 If you have had difficulty sleeping for a number of weeks, it may be worth talking to your doctor about possible causes and treatment options available to you. We recommend reaching out sooner rather than later to be safe.

You don't dream every night

Myth! Although you may not always remember your dreams, it is widely accepted that you dream every night. Most dreaming occurs during REM - rapid eye movement - sleep, but it is thought that some dreaming occurs during other parts of the night.

Your brain is inactive during sleep.

Myth! During sleep your brain is very active controlling body functions such as breathing, your heart rate, and hormone production. Not to mention consolidating memories and skills you have acquired during the day.

An hour before midnight is worth two after

Myth! There doesn't appear to be any truth to this old proverb. It is essential to get enough sleep and for most people this is around seven to eight hours sleep a night.6 If you have to get up early in the morning this will involve going to bed before midnight and may be where this myth originates. However, some people's body clocks are 'programmed' to sleep at certain times and if this is altered by even just an hour - it can affect the way they feel.

Salted caramel

21. Is there something that has frustrated you recently? Talk about it.

Family! Daughter who after so much persuasion and talk talk talk. Agreed to go to detox and rehab. After three days she’s decided she can do it herself. Frustration doesn’t do my feelings justice.

19th Who / what inspires you?

Inspiration comes from unexpected places, usually at a time one least expects to be inspired.
There is no one person or thing which inspires me.
Inspiration might come from something I’m reading or watching on television. Maybe a documentary or even simply a saying.
I actually think for myself it comes from within. I often push myself to do things I don’t feel like doing. I think I have an inner dialogue which tell myself I can achieve something even when I don’t believe it. Mostly I’m right I usually can’t/ don’t achieve it but at least I tried.
Perhaps I’m a little crazy? 🤪

18th If you had an entire day to do ONLY things you enjoy, what would you do?
Where would you go? Who would be with you?

I’d spend time with my favourite people. They are my granddaughters Stephanie and Beth. Steph has four.beautiful children but I don’t think they’d be coming with us on this special day. Beth is 20 weeks pregnant with her first child. She is an amazing person, she has always managed to keep me and her grandad in her life even when at her busiest.
We would probably go out for lunch somewhere outside in a garden.

There would be a walk in the bush with my dog on this day. The day wouldn’t be too hot or cold but probably Autumn when the leaves pile up and the slight smell of decay is in the air. I love that smell.

I would fit in time for an afternoon tea with my two best friends, Noreen and Suzie. Probably at Noreen’s house using one of her many tea pots.

The an evening with my hubby, sharing a bottle of wine and watching an episode of our favourite series on tv.

17. Take your mind off the cold weather and think ahead:
Make a list of fun things you are going to do this summer!

Well as we are still in the middle of our summer my thoughts are turning to my favourite time of the year, Autumn. I love the cooler weather.
In the summer I keep covered up away from the intense Australian sun. I’ve never really understood why people go down to the hot sand on a 40 degrees day. The sand is so hot it burns your bare feet. The water reflects the sun and even when standing in the ocean you still get really burned. I wear a hat every time I leave the house. After a really hot day it’s hard to sleep because the temp is often still 30 degrees. If you sit outside in the evening the mosquitoes will bite.
So you can keep Summer, I’ll take winter anytime.

16 th . It’s Mardi Gras! What’s the best party you’ve ever been to?

The best party I’ve ever been to would be our Golden Wedding Celebration Party.
All our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were there. My husband made a speech for the first time ever. He was even emotional, I’m sure I saw a tear in his eye. It was a day to remember.

15th. This list begins from I was a child.

1. Jerusalem. This hymn my dad used to sing as he did tasks around the house. He had a lovely baritone voice and although the words never made sense to me, I used to love him sing it.

2. Maria. From West Side Story reminds me of my love for all musicals when I was in my teens.

3. Anything from the Beatles. The musical background to my courting days.

4. This is my lovely day. The song from my wedding day.

5. Always look on the bright side. From Monty Python. This saying I have engraved on a bracelet given to me by my family, because they say that is what I always say.

6. Always on my mind by Willy Nelson. This reminds me of a sticky patch in our long marriage.

7. Nora Jones first album. Reminds me of a time my husband and I were living apart for 8 months. A time of healing.

13. Mid-month review! How are your goals coming along? What can you accomplish in the remainder of this month?

I’m enjoying this month at WdC. I’ve entered the Lodestar Contest which runs over four weeks. Up to part four soon. I also wrote a poem for The Bard’s Hall contest. I rarely write poetry. Know nothing about rhymes or metre, but enjoyed the process this time as it is for a One Star Poem. Think I’ve managed to do that.

14. Happy Valentine’s Day? How about let’s skip the whole V-day thing and think about friendship instead.
Write a list of your friends and the qualities about them you most admire.

I have a few amazing friends. Two of them stand out a being super special. We can tell each other anything at all without being judged. I love their concern, their willingness to help if needed and for just being there when I need someone to talk to.
