We are surrounded by beauty and goodness. Whether we choose to see or acknowledge it depends on our values.
I valued the young men who stayed with me 30 years ago. They were mostly refugees from wars in Central America. I could see their worth and I'm certain that most have lead good lives in Canada or elsewhere. I especially remember Mynor and Jermesy in this regards.
"O FRIEND! In the garden of thy heart plant naught but the rose of love, and from the nightingale of affection and desire loosen not thy hold." is a famous Baha'i quote.
This isn't to be confused with toxic positivity. There are numerous Scriptures that speak to empathy and selflessness. But again... we choose what we see or acknowledge.
As a young gardener I had my favorite weeds. Even weeds gave me joy. My world was very small growing up. It has grown since then and I've seen my share of ugliness; but, yesterday I picked dandelions and put them in a used anise extract bottle with a sprig of sage: yellow, grey, green and brown, a bit of beauty by my door.
It is an important blog post. The blogger tries hard to understand our constantly transformative attitude. In our science, literature and cultural fields, we can observe the same kind of tendency that will make our lives charmless.
I think there was a psychological studied done with teenagers in a classroom around eye colour that speaks to exactly what you are saying and shows how easier it is to "programme" a group of people to hate/act differently to another group for something that they have no control over - likely not having brown eyes. It was fascinating.
Great entry. I think there is some programming, for lack of a better term, built into DNA. Culture creates further, as you said. I've often wondered if there isn't something else imbedded into DNA that stops some people from questioning while others are basically rebels against everything and change all that they can- never surrendering to fate.
Maybe one day science will be able to answer. Let's just hope scientists and people don't start tinkering in order to get the "perfect person" cause I have the fear they'd want the obedient ones and no rebels.
Programming is indeed something that can be instilled into someone from the psychological perspective.
When you are born, you have no idea what's right from wrong, who's purple or magneta, or why you should be scared of certain things. I believe the environment and those who nurture you have a part to play. They, in turn, help plant those seeds of prejudice, narcissm, and all the other negative things we witness (not to ignore the good things that can also be instilled in one).
If you've then been raised to think of the negatives, it does take personal choice to re-wire yourself to do what's right. Not so easy a task, is it?
Another great thought-provoking blog entry, Joy. Thanks for sharing.
I have long felt that if someone is placed in a position of power, or is elected to that position, they will eventually be corrupted by it, That person wants things their way, and may start a war as a result. The sad thing is, they don't care about the average person, only themselves. Another thing they might do is run their country as they wish, again with no care about the averqge person. Just my humble opinion here.
A smile is an important tool that may carry either a positive or a negative message. It is non-verbal. But it has tremendous power. Through smiles, communication may be easier. We should use it as an optimistic aspect.

Nothing about you is forced!
Then, I can understand about the kind of smile to cover the pain inside, especially in your profession. You are very brave to do what you are doing.
