The poem which won 1st place at Rebel Poetry is "Stained Portrait" . I don't usually write in such an overdramatic fashion

The poem which placed second at "Writing 4 Kids" is "Earth is Home" . That is more of my style

The story which placed second at "The Bard's Hall Contest" is "Peg Legs, Parrots and Samurai Swords" . I occasionally write something that might be considered funny...

THE STORY

A parrot helps Captain O'Leary solve the Cop Shop Mystery on Founder's Day.

WHAT I LIKED

I liked how Captain O'Leary was inspired to flush the crooks out in the open. True Genius!

POV NARRATION/TENSE

This is told in the 3rd person omniscient. Past tense is used in the story.

DIALOGUE

The dialogue drives the narration.

OPENING PARAGRAPH

The opening paragraph sets up the dilemma who stole the loot. There are a lot of suspects, but some are more suss than others.

CHARACTERS

The characters are highly entertaining and keep the readers engaged. Bingo had to be my favorite, but Brimley and Polly Wanda Cracka were a hoot in their own comedic ways.

Not sure about celebrating the birthday's twice in a year though. It's hard enough getting through one alone!

THE POEM

The poem took a look at the properties of a mountain.

WHAT I LIKED

As the poem began, I could see myself in a helicopter, flying over the mountain, making my assessments. Great way to put the reader in the moment.

STRUCTURE

This is a diamante poem. The rules involve having 7 seven lines, first and last line, just one word which is a noun, 2nd and 6th lines, 2 words which are adjectives, 3rd and 5th lines have 3 words which are verbs, 4th line has 4 words - nouns. Diamantes don't have to play hard by the rules, but they should take the shape of a diamond.

MECHANICS

I did not spot any spelling/punctuation mistakes. Good use of WDC ML to increase the font and make it easier to read on WDC.

DESCRIPTIONS

The words used to describe this mountain really gave the mountain it's own look and personality. The use of the word "aiguille," I found an inspired word choice and I had to look it up for it's meaning.

PARTING THOUGHTS/SUGGESTIONS

The opening sets the stage for what to expect from the poem. The title, "Diamonds in the Hills," can be used for the obvious - the mountain is the diamond, but it's word "aiguille" that really fills out the description and makes the diamond take form and shape. Nice word play and expression. The poem followed the prompt and used one of the following words: mountain, beach, or forest. Good luck in the Bard's Hall Contest.

I love trains and as a kid thought I'd be a conductor on the Ny subway system.

Thanks for your story for the Bard's Hall July 2025 contest. You did a good job incorporating the photo prompt into your story. There were good emotional elements in the story that tapped into the heartstrings. The story was sweet, inspirational and ended on a hopeful note. Well done!

Peg Legs, Parrots and Samurai Swords

Captain O'Leary facepalmed at the mess in front of him.

“Tell me we have security cameras here.”

“We'd have to ask Brimley Stone, the head maintenance guy who wears a pirate's outfit all the time because he's an amputee with a fancy prosthetic that looks like a peg leg.”

When they went looking for Brimley, they couldn't find him; no one had seen him around, even though he would stand out from the other people dressed as pirates, with his “peg leg.”

This was highly suspicious: why wasn't the head maintenance available for the biggest gathering of the year?

He would know how to hide the alarm clock, and he could have hauled the treasure off through the service door.

Bingo screeched out, “Polly wanna cracka, Polly wanna cracka!”

“Hey, isn't Polly-Wanda Kracka the name of the obsessive sword collecting actress?”

“She could have been in on it: there was a priceless Samurai sword in the loot!”

“But why is Bingo telling – they should have taken him with them – she's a parrot trainer, too!”

“He would be too hard to hide – a kidnapped parrot – but where do we find the loot?”

“Fake them out, fake them out!” Bingo squawked.

“How can we do that, you silly bird?”

“Hey, let's announce that the loss was no big deal at all, because it was only imitation treasure, and the real stuff is hidden away in a bank vault.”

“Then we'll monitor the area for suspicious activity and see if Polly-Wanda and Brimley try to dispose of the stuff and pretend they never did it – brilliant!”

The announcement made everyone who didn't know laugh and cheer; they were relieved the Founder's Day celebration wasn't ruined after all.

A couple hours later, Brimley and Polly-Wanda were caught throwing the “fake” treasure in a dumpster behind the theater.

Brimley needed a new prosthetic, which would have cost him thousands, so he decided to act like the pirate he'd been cosplaying for so many years and raid the treasure under his nose.

Polly-Wanda had a crush on Brimley, she was obsessed with that Samurai sword, and she wanted to take Bingo with them when they ran away, but Brimley refused because the parrot never liked him.

Screaming Nell turned out to be an accomplice, Polly's sister; she had to announce the presence of the “bomb” because no one might have noticed it otherwise.

They were hiding the loot in dummy treasure chests in Polly's dressing room at the theater.

When the people of Bardstown found out about Brimley’s prosthetic, they felt sorry for him and started a fundraiser so he wouldn't have to become a “real” pirate to get it replaced.

He and Polly-Wanda later broke up because she wanted to use his donations to buy expensive swords instead!

“Listen,” Captain O'Leary said to his crew. “I'm just glad the treasure is safe and our Bardstown semiquincentennial went smoothly after all – and would someone please give Bingo some saltwater taffy – he did help us solve this mystery!”

“Happy Founder's Day, everyone!” Bingo squawked.
