[Introduction]
Have you ever seen a ghoul as its feeding? How it tears into its victims as if it was cotton candy. Blood spilling everywhere as the shrill of the poor soul resonates through your body. Only to realize that you could be next on the dinner menu. If not then you are one of the fortunate people who don’t know.
It happened on June 25 2015. That’s when my life changed for all eternity. It was a beautiful sunny morning. The blue jays were singing their sweet song as the smell of fresh baked brownies drifted into my room. I smiled happily as I knew that mom had just finished baking her mouthwatering triple chocolate brownies. I hurried down to the kitchen before my brother could steal the brownies for himself.
As I reached the kitchen however, I noticed something was off. The brownies sat untouched on the counter. But that’s not what I noticed at first, it was the horrid stench of death. The putrid smell of coppery blood filled my nostrils. I covered my mouth in order to not vomit. I searched the area for the cause of the smell. That’s when I saw it. The horrifying disfigured body that had once belonged to my mother. Without thinking I ran to her corpse screaming for her to wake up. As I touched her shoulder I felt the thick, sticky red liquid that oozed out of it.
I sat there for an eternity before my brother came into the kitchen. I swung my head towards him in surprise. Salty tears were filling my eyes as he stood there paralyzed in horror. Finally he moved towards me slowly. He pulled me up and away from mom.
“We need to go. Now Katerina.” He said urgently, pulling me towards the door. I nodded reluctantly and followed him to our black 66 impala. With the start of the engine we drove off away from the scene.
We reached a hotel by night fall. Brother had demanded we had to get as far away as we could. We booked a room for the night from a greasy looking old man whom reeked of booze and 6 week old cat piss. We found our room with no problem. The only problem was that there was one bed, which meant one of us would sleep on the floor. Brother took the floor and allowed me the luxury of sleeping on the bed. But the bed was no luxury at all. It felt as though you were laying on a bed of nails. The smell was even worse. It smelt strongly of mothballs and cigarettes. But anything was better compared to the smell of your own mother’s blood soaking the floor.
We fell asleep within minutes of dead bolting the door. I asked brother to sleep next to me because I was scared. He smiled and curled up next to me, wrapping him arms protectively around me. We slept soundly until around midnight. The hotel had been very quiet up until then. As midnight approached I woke up in a sudden cold sweat. It was as if I knew something terrible was about to happen. Brother was awake as well. He had the same look of fear in his bright blues eyes. Suddenly the room was dead quiet as if we were in a vacuum sealed room. It was uncomfortable to say the least.
Minutes passed before any noise was made. Then there came a faint but distinctive male scream. Followed by the sound of liquid slashing against a wall. Brother told me to stay where I was but get ready to run if needed. He grabbed a baseball bat and crept towards the door. Then as carefully as he could he opened the door a slight crack. I watched as all the color drain from his face. He quickly but quietly shut the door and rushed towards the bed.
“Get out of here. Go through the window and don’t look back. It is worse than I feared little sis. Do you remember the ghost stories I used to tell you? The ones with the evil ghouls who eat human flesh,” I nodded slowly unsure of where he was going with this. “Well they weren't just stories. In fact it was that very creature who killed mom. And that creature is outside our door right now feasting on the doorman.” He whispered as he pushed me towards the window.
Suddenly there was a loud thunderous bang, followed by a deafening crack. The door that was our only protection from the ghoul was smashed into little pieces on the floor. In the doorway stood a small boy no older than 18. He stared at us with his hunger filled eyes. I would never forget those pitch black eyes. Their irises with the color of fresh blood. He looked at my brother with a menacing smile and barreled into him, knocking him to the ground. The ghoul let out an inhuman laughter as my brother began to scream loudly.
With one swift movement the boy sunk his teeth into my brother’s neck and ripped a chunk of flesh from his body. I sat there staring at the creature in terror, unable to move due to fear. The ghoul started pulling chuck after chunk of human flesh from my brother as he continued to scream. The scream shook me right down to my core because I knew there was nothing I could do to save my brother. I also knew that there was no hope left for me. I was the next meal for the ghoul.
Soon it will all be over for me. I’m writing to you now before the ghoul is finished my brother. I need my story to be told. My name is Katerina De Angelis. I am 15 years old and I’m about to be eaten by a ghoul. Yes all the horror stories are true. I can hear the ghoul now. It is coming for me. These are my final words. I pray that my story is found and is told. I warn you, fellow reader that ghouls look like anyone. They can be anyone. So I wish you luck and I hope…
