10/24 Beer
by Max Author IconMail Icon
The cold mist rolled off the lake, and passed over me with unnatural speed. The distant sound of traffic ground to an abrupt halt, and what followed was the sound of shattering glass, combined with a monstrous roar.

I assumed the roar was that of a lion, or bear, and my instincts told me to run the other way...towards the lake. Somehow, the lake seemed far more dangerous and foreboding than any animal. Its placid surface perfectly shined back the light from the sun, as if it were a tremendous lens, or mirror. The light was almost blinding, and my legs moved without my conscious mind's permission, back towards the road.

Hundreds, perhaps even thousands of glass beer bottles lied shattered, upon the asphalt. I dared not approach too closely, and assumed some kind of car accident. If that were the case, then where were the cars?

A tremendously large truck suddenly emerged from the mist, crashing onto the glass bottles, upside down, as if it had flown straight through the air.

I collapsed backwards in panic, and saw the bus approach. I could not see its driver through the mist, but I could already tell that it was not moving like a bus should. It was swerving, as if bending at its middle, zig zagging towards me.

It stopped at the broken glass, and leaned slightly forwards, as if it were a face, looking at the ground. The front then turned towards me. I could not see a driver. In fact, I couldn't see an inside compartment either. I saw nothing inside, except darkness.

As if coming to a decision, the bus then changed direction, and slowly turned around. It bent as it moved, as if it were a tremendous slinky, or a gargantuan snake.

As the bus disappeared into the mist, I suddenly realized what was bothering me about the light shining off the lake.

There was no sun.

The sky was completely overcast, but the lake was shining brightly. Perhaps not as brightly as sun. No, it shone more like the moon.

I found no sign of a truck driver, but several of the beer bottles weren't broken. I drank them. Eventually, I found the courage to walk back towards the lake.
