Beer Dawn raced faster then she’d ever gone before, thundering through the forest, weaving between trees, leaping down rocky slopes, finally coming to rest at the southern end of the stream. Her chest fought to take in more air and her heart pounded in fear. She took a cautious look back the way she’d come. “What’s the matter?” Dawn leapt into the stream, braced to flee again when she saw her friend Autumn a few yards upstream, water dripping from her chin. “Whoa there,” said Autumn. Dawn ran to her friend’s side, looking wildly around. Leaning close she whispered in a shaking voice, “I crossed the black.” “Are you nuts?” “No, it’s worse. I watched it for a long time. I thought it was safe, but as soon as I started across, the Monster came for me. It was so fast! It came out of nowhere.” Autumn gaped. She’d never seen the monster, but everyone had heard the stories. “Huge glowing eyes, just like they said,” Dawn continued, “and when it got close it made the most terrifying screams, even worse than the cougar. The glowing eyes turned away, and it’s huge body swung at me, throwing huge stones at me that shattered all over. I ran away before any of them hit me.” “I can’t believe it!” “I almost died.” A rustling from the dark made them both jump and turn in unison. “There you are. You fawns know not to wander away from the heard after sunset. Stop your games and come along now.” The three deer disappeared into the quite woods together. ** Images For Use By Upgraded+ Only ** |
