Looking for a guiding light. Next round opens Feb 2025. |
"RESULTS" You know those stories that have some element you wish you'd written? Some element that, when a peer is having trouble with it, you point to a certain story for them to read, to see how it's done? That's the kind of thing you need to write for this round. I'll give you a list of story elements to choose from; you choose one and write a story that is a great example of how to write that element. ---- Guidelines ---- The contest closed at 11:59 PM (WdC time) on the 15th of July, 2018. The contest will be back next year, with a completely new mission and set of guidelines for contestants who want to earn the exclusive Lodestar Merit Badge! The stories had to be between 1,500 and 5,500 words long. Short stories only. Proofread, edit, and revise. All ratings and genres were allowed. Entries' titles, however, had to be at a 13+ or E rating so that linking them here did not compromise this forum's 13+ rating. There were no restrictions on editing. One entry per contestant. Previously written items were fine, but they had to be freshened up for this contest. They could not be items that placed in another contest and had an awardicon to prove it. (Honorable mentions were okay [awardicon or not], as were items that placed in another contest, but did not earn an awardicon.) Entry posts had to include: —The entry's approximate word count, rounded to the nearest one-hundred. —A genre link to the item, likey so: {g-item:#######}* * Linking ▼ ---- The List of Elements ---- Chose one of these and really take it home when you write your story. Other story elements will be considered, and they can certainly work to highlight the focus, so don't neglect them. However, the story that shows the very best example of how to work one of these elements well will be the winner. Note: a "very best example" is polished in its writing and integration to the story. Telepathy. Specifically, this element should have an affect on the POV of the story. How much and what kind are up to you. Dream sequence. It should be integral to the plot that a dream sequence is part of the story. Twist ending. It should turn the story on its head, but still make sense upon rereading. Sex.The sex scene(s) should fit the voice/style of the rest of the short story, and there should absolutely be a "rest of the short story." If you turn in an entry that is nothing but (or hardly more than) a sex scene, you have zero chances of winning. ---- Qualified Entries ---- "Gemistal: Faegala Dream " [ASR] by Paul D "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "Cavalier" [18+] by A E Willcox "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "Flashback" [18+] by Angus "The revelation" [13+] by Koyel~writing again "Carrie's Locket" [13+] by River "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "Time After Time" [13+] by Eric Wharton "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "'She'" [18+] by Sally "Invalid Item" [] by A Guest Visitor "Stairway to Heaven" [13+] by D.
