I think you're right about the good memoirs showing a journey of strength and courage. Those are the one's that really garner my interest--less those about famous people, but stories of actual normal humans overcoming extreme circumstances.
I would be thrilled to read a memoir about your travels in the Middle East! That sounds like such an interesting experience and I bet you have a very unique viewpoint because of it.
