I definitely agree that not all memoirs are self-indulgent or exploitative. I really like the genre and I've read some great memoirs. I think it can be hard to strike a balance between telling someone things you've overcame or ways you've succeeded while also sounding humble.
I think it's really cool that you're working on two memoirs right now! I'd really be interested in reading either of them. I also like reading travel memoirs and seeing what people have experienced in other parts of the world.
I just added This Does Not Leave This House to my library reading list. It sounds right up my alley.
