5 Mexican Writers: - Carlos Fuentes -José Augustín -Elizabeth Algrávez -Fernando del Paso -Margo Glanz Shapiro About Carlos Fuentes (1928-2012): The son of a Mexican diplomat, Carlos Fuentes was actually born in Panama, and spent his early years moving around in Latin America due to his fathers career. Fuentes has said this enabled him to see Latin America as a critical outsider. Working towards a career in diplomacy, Fuentes became head of cultural relations at the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs before he became a writer. In 1958 his first book was published ('Where the Air is Clear'/'La región más transparente') and he went on to become one of Mexico's most celebrated writers, and a leading figure in modern Latin American literature. He has been referred to as 'the Balzac of Mexico'. Although he never won the Nobel Prize in Literature, he was often considered to be a likely candidate, and he won many other awards.
