I don't think it's at all abnormal to use erotica as a plot device or an avenue for character development. In fact, I think it can be a powerful plot tool, if used wisely. That's my gripe a lot of the time, that erotica is NOT used wisely, but instead as a safety valve for running out of ideas. I can pull out some more recent Tom Clancy novels, for example, that included sex scenes between Jack Ryan and his wife that didn't fit the story line, because they were overly graphic. When I read them, it came across to me not only as sub-par writing, but an indication that Clancy was running out of plot ideas and needed filler.
If you're going to write erotica/sex scenes into a story, make sure it fits the plot line and the characters. And yes, Elisa, if done right, it can be a GREAT plot/character development tool
