Something that helps me (although I can't do it anymore cause I live alone) is to sleep in the same room with someone else.
In college I used to have horrible dreams about me being raped or having a baby or watching someone being abused and not doing anything about it. I still have them sometimes... but it used to be a lot worse, every night. Whenever I could I'd nap or sleep in my guy's room (which was against the rules, I could've gotten kicked out for that believe it or not) but waking up just with someone there was helpful. It helped me snap back into reality quicker and just being with someone was comforting.
Now when I'm having really bad bouts with nightmares I sleep with the light on. It's the same kind of snapping back to reality when I open my eyes to face the blinding lamp.
