Hey WT...welcome to the community. I am new myself. My feeling is all that "junk" you keep in mind only hinders the creative progress. When I stopped buying books on characterization, diaglogue, plot, conflict, etc. my writing began to improve. Whenever I think too much about what I am writing my work comes out feeling labored and stilted.
I stopped caring about what others think of my work a long time ago. These days, the ideas flow like wine and I write with relative ease. I would be lying if I told you I never read books on writing anymore - in fact, I just bought a couple of books on writing flash fiction. I am new to this style of writing and thought I would write some flash pieces for the fun of it and for practice. I think it's a good way to refine your editing skills.
So what is your style of writing like? Do you plot, do you outline? Are you big on plot or characters or both? Do you prefer poetry, short prose, novel-length stories? What genre do you write in?
