I really have to remember to keep up with the forums more often!! The biggest advice I can give on steeling yourself against getting hurt from reviews is to look at exactly what the person is saying. Are they critiquing the content? Or are they critiquing your *writing* which is completely different. When I read, I search for sentences that are awkward, or where the flow is not smooth enough. If I have to read a sentence twice, I comment on that and let them know that. I also search for points where things don't seem quite right. If it is a personal opinion about the content of the story - like the actions of the characters - I let the author know that it is my opinion, but I also tell them what I think about it. I have read stories where too many details were included and the story was written about as sterile as an operating room, and that made it boring. I let the author know about that, and encouraged her to include more details to make the story much more realistic. If you find that people are barking at you about the subject of the story, then you can pretty much blow them off for not writing an accurate review. Don't let them get you down because at that point it is based on their *opinion* of *what* the story is *about* not how well written it is. There is a big difference in that distinction. I think I'm rambling and getting distracted now, so I'm gonna shush... ~Naughty wildcat |
