'Pair' is a singular noun. Technically, it is only one pair. You gotta add an 's' to it to make it plural...technically.
So...

or
----> The pairs were instrumental...
But, seeing as how you only have one pair, I'd go with the first one. See? I can't keep myself from using humor when contradicting someone. *feels tummy fizz*
