Not to be contrary to others that have answered this question, because such things make my stomach burn and is generally unhealthy to my sense of harmony, but you have it right in your text.

'Pair' is a singular noun. Technically, it is only one pair. You gotta add an 's' to it to make it plural...technically.

So...

----> The pair was instrumental...

or

----> The pairs were instrumental...

But, seeing as how you only have one pair, I'd go with the first one. See? I can't keep myself from using humor when contradicting someone. *feels tummy fizz*
