Law of the Land
You have to live it to know the farmer’s life,
the joy of plowing, planting and nurturing seed;
even the weeding is a task of pure love
that can only be topped come harvest time
when one reaps the fruit of honest labor
and stores it away to provide for tomorrow.

Our farmer, Bill, being ever mindful of tomorrow,
works constantly at enhancing his workaday life
by adding cattle to crops through redoubling his labor,
then enhancing his herd through improving the seed.
It’s a great deal of work, but he still finds the time
to enjoy the freedom that comes with love

of nature which, in turn, oft demands that Bill’s love
include the hail and the blight that'll strike his crops tomorrow.
Yet Bill is strong, and he knows there’s still time
to re-seed his corn and watch new plants take life.
But in the back of his mind, he knows that’s the last seed,
and his best cow just this morning perished in labor.

The next week, Bill watches old Joe next door abandon his labor,
sell out to Cargil, who farm without love.
Though Bill dearly loves his 80 acres, Joe’s planted a seed
in fertile soil, and it's likely to sprout on an early tomorrow.
Weekend nights, Bill tosses and turns to a new page in life,
dreams of mixed feelings engulf him and devour the time,

and mid-morning on Monday, around coffee time,
Bill places a call and brokers his labor.
He learns there’s yet time to remap his life
and seek out new fortune infused with new love.
He’ll reenroll in UI first thing tomorrow,
five years he’s been gone, but a still active seed

is driving him onward, proving just one seed
can vastly change the direction of time.
Three years of law, and Bill begins a new tomorrow
of helping small farmers channel their labor
to fight off the Cargils in a joint mission of love:
to protect and defend their small slice of life.

Even the tiniest planted seed may spur labor
on in time best measured in love
rather than the yesterday, today, or tomorrow of life.
