It's interesting that you bring this up. I thought of this subject while I was thinking of the book The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brian. Tim O'Brian was apart of alpha company in Vietnam, and in this book he proceeds to write a series of short stories about a fictional Tim O'Brian in alpha company in Vietnam. He is, in effect, writing literally what he knows, but about entirely fictional events.
