Angela, Jim is undoubtedly an expert in seizure activity but there is one thing you do need to stress to the aide and your mother in the event her brother in law has another seizure. Make sure nothing, and I mean absolutely NOTHING, is put in his mouth. Most people who are not familiar with seizures will do this in an attempt to keep the person from "swallowing" their tongue. Believe me it won't happen. It is physically and anatomically impossible to do. It will only restrict their breathing and may result in a tragedy. No doubt Jim didn't mention this because for someone familiar with seizures this is just common sense. But common sense often flies out the window when someone not used to seeing a seizure observes one. It's very scary. As a nurse I have witnessed them numerous times but even so I am a bit anxious when I see one begin. Then the calm settles in and I concentrate on keeping the person safe from injury. Sometimes it may seem it will last forever but it won't. The best thing to do is try to be calm and keep the person safe and be there to comfort them when they come around. Good Luck. |
