Few rules are absolute, but the following is a pretty good "guideline" to follow when purchasing books on fiction writing:

Tutorials are good tools. Every writer needs an understanding of the process in order to be successful. However, If the author of said book is better known for authoring tutorials rather than for actually writing fiction, avoid the book.
