Writer's Fallout Shelter

I know as a person I can be defensive or insecure sometimes. Everyone has their own weaknesses even if they aren't writers. As far as writing "anything I want," I think that only applies in the first stage when the author chooses his or her characters, settting, and plot. Those factors decide the genre, and once established, the author must remain in that framework.

Usually I mix genre factors in my stories, particularly sci-fi and fantasy. The world I developed in my collaborative project is an example. The setting is mostly medieval, focused on superstition, but the king has a portal to other realms and everyone has very good healthcare, which is a little more modern. Because of the portal, good quality of life is possible.

I have similar worlds in my non-collaborative works, one big example comes to mind. I wrote a series of works several years ago involving a world humans migrated to after earth was destroyed. The lifestyle is "primitive" but it has shops and at least one mansion. hmm... I could expand on that world's history. Right now the series is of short stories, but expanding on it could become a novel.
