Read the following:
"The Snows of Kilimanjaro" by Hemingway
"The Death of Artemio Cruz" by Carlos Fuentes
Both these (the first a short story, the second a novel) deal with the experience of someone who is dying, and must evaluate life.
The quality of your writing is sound. The narration and description are very real. But a terrible number of soliders have died in the dirt of battle, in similar circumstances. You want to ask yourself, what is the story this particular soldier needs to tell? Exercise this situation, and find out where it leads you. You may be surprised at what you find. Feel free to post anything that comes out of this, and note that in the post--I'll check it out.
