I don't know if it fits the bill of this forum, but the world for my book "Invalid Item" is an alternate history of our own. The story's setting is in the United States, but in the past a senator named Huey Long (who was a real person) was elected president (instead of dying to an assassin's bullet). His presidency changed America as we know it to more of a socialist country. Also, there is a secret spanning society of creatures called 'nain'. They are humans who have reached immortality (not 'undeath', like vampires, however). The main thrust of the story will be the interaction between the one particular mortal, Silas, and the nain. Major cities are ones we all already know (New York. L.A., Chigaco, etc.), but they will be markedly different in design and day-to-day function due to the socialism prevalent in the government. The culture and customs of the nain will also be interesting. Being a society of those who aren't faced with death, they lack the urgency and passion of mortals. Nain society looks up to the mortals for artistic and moral inspiration. |
