I think it might depend on who the character is. Is the character the narrator of the story? Then you can covney his or her inner thoughts and overt displays of emotion aren't necessary. But if it's soembody else, who you can't read the mind of, then there has to be some kind of sign or visible evidence as to his or her emotions.
The angry wife doesn't have to throw something or scream at the top of her lungs though. She can just turn the other way when they go to bed. And a lot of people talk less when they're sad. So it doesn't have to be in-your-face emotion to be recognisable.
