As for the image on the cases of all colors, they are 'costumicons' and you need at least a Premium membership to get it all the time, but there are periods throughout the year that enables 'renting' one but it costs gps, also explained in fags here:

As for what Sully mentioned, I agree that the word 'preferred' is misleading and I mention that in my blog. But just see it as if this site is a company, and we are all employees. New employees can be way more experienced than old timers. Newbies are new to the site, that's it. But the case colors have two functions and I think it should be changed but that's just me.

I also would like to have the preferred changed, tired of being taken for what I am not; a snob looking down on black cases. Grey is for those without an item in their port. Black is for those with at least one item in their port and the other colors are for those with some responsibilities in the site and it goes with the ratio per total amount of members.

As in all things, who gets promoted is like justice or any other kind of business promotions, some are deserved, some not. Can't have perfection, so better to deal with it than fight it..

Also, the blue cases are for moderators that try to make the wdc experience better by fiedling complaints, check if ratings are well selected for items etc. That too you can check in the faqs.
