Today's word: *swarthy*
Without checking the dictionary, what is your definition of the word swarthy? Do you think it has positive or negative connotations? (OK, check the dictionary if you want to. This is a discussion piece, not a test.)

The issue was raised in The Boston Globe today by a writer who explored two possible answers to the question. I am particularly interested because I was confronted with a similar question around a word in my own writing recently.
