Apparently the two extremes just couldn't work together. The far right will accept nothing less than mass deportations and the far left will accept nothing less than open boarders. Here's what I gather (Correct me where I'm wrong) The coroner reports time of death when the senate voted not to end debate over the bill. That would have meant stop talking and send it to the house, where there surely would have been more amendments before it could possibly even have been passed but the majority votes, mostly Republicans, were too unhappy with the bill to even take that step before certain amendments could be passed. One of those amendments would have been to disqualify “Criminal aliens,” that is those who have committed a crime other than coming into the USA illegally in the first place, from getting any of the benefits of the bill. This was struck down, that move was lead by Democratic senator Edward Kennedy and, may the stars declare the unlimited lunacy of our leaders for this, John McCain was with him on it. Apparently the thinking was that the bill only had a chance of passing in a Democrat controlled house if it were as inclusive as possible. On the other hand, Democrats accuse Republicans of failing to provide a good list of amendments in a timely manner, and they may have a point. Even if you expect the Democrats to kill it you deliver it anyway, if only to expose them for being unreasonable, but if, ad the Democrats claim, it's the Republicans who are at least equally unreasonable, then this group of Republicans is guilty of promising a list of amendments and stalling. In a nut shell, there are an equal number of idiots on both sides and there is no reason that anyone in the country should be happy about this. Even if you opposed the bill, and none of us were exactly jumping up and down for it, the senators on both sides refuse to make any attempt at amending and passing a sane, safe, and functional immigration bill. |
