Dear N/A,
We certainly all need support at one time or another, and for those of us who sometimes have a hard time reaching out IRL, a forum such as WDC can be a wonderful way of connecting with others. It’s also true that we can show as much or as little of ourselves as we choose, in this medium. And as a result, the help we offer can only reach so far. I too choose to be available whenever I’m online. There are times when I am emotionally drained, and feel that I cannot give any more of myself.
If being there for others is important to you, then I think it’s necessary for you to gauge each incident as it occurs. How much can I give at this time? The only obligation you have is the one you make to yourself. When you’ve reached your limit, you let the person know you care, share your well wishes, and bow out. When I’ve reached that point, I usually find that I need to step away from the computer altogether.
And I want to make it clear that when I talk about reaching my limit, that I’m not talking about the limit to how much I can tolerate a person . . . I’m talking about a personal, emotional and mental limit.
I hope that helps!
