It's happening "now" because Roe v. Wade didn't happen until 1973.. It's a lot easier to sneak around and get an illegal abortion than it is to prevent a legal abortion. Also, there's more young people having sex than in the past. So there are more unwed women and poor women getting pregnant. Also, since it is legal, when a woman does get an abortion she doesn't have to hide it and it's easy for the other side to find out about it. Also, it's easier to mass-communicate now. talk radio, news channels on TV, Internet, etc.

The pro-abortion crowd argues that it's inside the woman's body so the issue is the woman's body, or to a lesser extent her right to privacy. The anti-abortion crowd argues that a fetus is a human life (which is true) and they don't think the issue is the woman's body since they believe she revoked her rights to bodily privacy and control when she created another life. They also promote adoption as an alternative.
