I'm a red-state dweller these days (originally hailing from suburban MD). So, I see more of the conservative than the liberal POV represented.
I think both sides are guilty of trotting out abortion or gay rights--with different stated "values" but with the same idea in mind....rallying the base, pandering. The truth is: the government is supposed to govern (mass transit, social programs, public education, libraries, etc) not turn into the "value police" (who can marry whom, what medical procedures are permissable). Last time I checked it wasn't a theocracy.
It just irks me to no end that these no-win debates rage on...used to distract us from what the government SHOULD be doing (healthcare, tax reform, transit issues, environment, education, border security, immigration, etc).
