It's good to talk about rating because we all ought to want to do it "right" but I don't think we should obsess too much about finding a community consensus on how to do it. Each individual is going to have their own idea about what constitutes good and bad writing, and all the degrees in between. Tate the concept of a 3 star rating, which is supposed to mean an average piece. This raises the question of what does average mean? Is it average for this site? Is it an average submission to a literary magazine. Is it what you would consider average for your own writing? If you are a high school student, you might use the average of what you know among your fellow high school students. It's good to give our personal rating system serious thought and to reassess it from time to time. But in the end, I think the ratings say at least as much about the rater as they do the ratee. I think an in depth review is more informative than a rating, but I sure do like to see those high ratings when they come my way.
