I agree with the learning the language rule, but I don’t think it should be inflexible. If this rule were inflexible, then the United Kingdom would collapse into civil war! There are tens of thousands of British citizens who refuse to speak English. These are citizens who can trace their ancestry back through time as far as I can. They are British and have been for a hundred generations. Yet you have to speak their language to get a job in, say, their telephone exchange. My father is one, and so too are my grandparents. With inflexible rules on immigration, Wales would be doomed! Now before someone says that Wales is a country, it isn’t. Scotland is, and Ireland, and both these countries are represented on our flag, the Union Jack, but Wales isn’t. Wales is a principality, the largest in the world actually, and Welsh is the native language. I suppose if we deport the non-English speaking Welsh, we could house the English speaking Eastern Europeans!! (tongue firmly in cheek) |
