Professionally, I get paid at least $15 per hour to edit, sometimes more. To enter a contest, I have to pay an entry fee (off site) to pay for readers and judges. It takes time and effort to do a thorough and quality critique and/or edit.

I get nothing for editing books that come into the publishing company, if a book is accepted to be published by us. We do offer editing for pay services for items not under contract, IF an author requests it.

A really good critique is worth more than GPs, but many people on the site don't even have the GPs to pay for one.
