Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day
For those of us who remember classic films which where famous for lavish scenery, fabulous costumes, and witty dialog might be interested in seeing " Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day." Starring Frances McDormand as Miss Pettigrew, it tells the story of a middle-aged London governess who finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. An attempt to gain new employment catapults her into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer. Set in pre-WW II London this story moves with big band music, large glamorous settings and Edith Head type style costumes, and Frances McDormand is wonderful in this role.

Originally written by Winifred Watson in 1935 she had hoped to make it into a musical and offered the role of Miss Pettigrew to Billy Burke, (The Good Witch of the North in The Wizard of Oz) but WW II had started and then the attack at Pearl Harbor which put off her hopes. She sold the movie rights to Universal Studios who held on to the story for many years until its release in 2008.
If you get the chance, rent it. You'll enjoy it.
