Hey Olivia -- I find it interesting you enjoy the present tense. Most present tense stories I find switch back and forth and the author loses their credibility with me at that point. If I find one that stays true to the tense, I think it can heighten the emotional impact of it. I also think stories told in past tense, if told well, can create a stronger sense of urgency, but that's just me. There's so much room to play with, and again, since most people who write present tense don't have a firm grasp on it, the story loses that sense of urgency for me. Having more than one language running through your mind must play havoc with the tenses! I have Swedish and English, and both are structured so differently that I find myself making simple mistakes when writing and I take longer to edit the piece trying to correct those structure issues. I've heard German is even worse, so my hat goes off to you for doing so well with translating to English!
