and have given some 3's and 3.5's, so I thought it was possible that you meant those.

It always boils down to rates, doesn't it? These are average and above, and I assume you thought them fair and honest, right?

The average rate I give is 2.5, and I consider them fair and honest. When I give a rate of 2.5, I accompany it with a review to show why. I don't rewrite their work, and I don't treat them with disrespect. There's no need to be specific to what 'mean and discourteous' mean to me, but it sure isn't a low rate. It's words, tone, attitude, etc.

I figured anyone would know what it means to them, and understand. As for me, I know it when I see it.

If these reviews were given to seasoned writers, I wouldn't have noticed them. But there seems to be a trend in motion to greet new members from the 'read a newbie' list, and initiate them by picking them a part.

In the meantime, there are review forums full of writers begging for tear-a-part feedback that never comes. Those are the ones who leave the site. Those are the ones I meant when I said review from the forums.

Good reviewers can tell if a piece of work is written by a 'new writer' or an experienced writer, and they don't jump on every error they can think of all at one time. Brand new writers are not ready for in-depths, they don't even know what the reviewer is talking about half the time. Reviewers that do this are showing off, not helping or encouraging. Give the 'new writer' one or two things to practice on, and leave the rest for the next time. They cannot grasp it all at once, especially if they are not encouraged.

There are reviews in between fluff and in-depth, and a lot of members know when and how to use them, and they do it well. Reviewing new writers shouldn't be all or nothing. Reviewing should be geared to the skill level of the writer, and not just an opportunity to show how much a reviewer knows.

That's what I mean.

I'm a reviewer and reviewing is important to the reputation of WDC as a writing site. It's important enough to do it right.
