As noted by NW, a member's community recognition adds 5 bonus points for each year of membership on Writing.Com. Along with showing a member's "established" date for their portfolio when you mouse over their portfolio icon (and showing it on their Portfolio page, as well), bonus points added to one's community recognition is a great way for us to recognize members within the community for their time here, whether they're actively involved or not. But, as it is numerical system, it also allows us the great flexibility to recognize members who've been here anywhere from 1 year, to the 9 years the site's been online, and it allows us continue that recognition for the next 9, 19 or 90 years. (If we were to try to add icons for 9 years, let alone 90, it would obviously get a bit overwhelming and complicated, let alone confusing for newer members trying to figure out what all the different year icons meant.) With community recognition, we're able to show it just about everywhere the author's handle is shown... And then we combine it with the other measures of that member's activity (which is very important) and acknowledgements within the community. ~~SM
